Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

Cerralbo - Salamanca

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario was built with granite ashlars and separated into a wide squared East End.  It has a single nave and a bell cote located at the foot of the church.  This church is the result of many transformations, mostly taking place in the 16th century. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly from the Romanesque period.  Remains from the Romanesque period are scarce and are mainly found on two corbels on the south side. It is possible then, that, the wall itself originated from this period.  On the northern side, there are remains from a blind doorway with a rounded arch that could fall within this time period as well.  On the western corner of the north wall, there is an eroded inscription of the consecration that, up until now, has not been studied thoroughly.  The inscription is composed of Visigoth characters which could go back to the 12th Century.  And we can deduce from its position that it had been previously relocated.

Monitoring

One of the objectives of the Atlantic Romanesque Plan is to achieve an optimal level of protection and maintenance of heritage assets, using the latest technologies and the most innovative solutions. In this regard, the church of Cerralbo has been integrated in the Monitoring Heritage System (MHS). MHS is a system that controls, in real time, various parameters that can affect the conservation of the temples, such as moisture or temperature. These are difficult to monitor visually and in some cases may pose a risk to the conservation of buildings and works of art. To avoid this and to improve the protection of the monument, the system has a number of sensors installed in the church, which emit data to the control center on a regular basis and wirelessly, where they are processed and interpreted.  In the occurrence of a potentially dangerous situation, a team of experts can act rapidly. We call this 'preventive conservation'.

Intervention

The intervention, simple, has focused on the renovation of the interior lighting, changing the lamps by others of new design. Thus, in addition to achieving adequate lighting to the church monumentabilidad, improves security and ensures greater efficiency. As well, new alabaster and steel windows have been installed. This new windows allow proper ventilation of the building and reduce damp problems. The intervention ended with the replacement of flooring in the area of the baptistery.
