Salamanca / Hinojosa de Duero. Route: Salamanca "Arribes"

Hinojosa de Duero belongs to the region of El Abadengo on the border with Portugal.  It is located on the extreme western side of  the province of Salamanca within the Natural Park of Arribes del Duero.

The area which has been populated since prehistoric times possesses Neolithic archeological remains such as the dolmen of Nava del Rocío.  There are also forts from the Second Iron Age like Moncalvo or Malgarrida.  The necropolis with inscriptions revealing the Roman settlement of El Cabezo de San Pedro is also relevant.

During the 12th century, repopulation of the region occurred around the castle located on the hill of San Pedro.  Its ashlars were used to build the Romanesque Church of Cristo de la Misericordia in the same place.

The sepulchers of Rodillo de Laja excavated in rock are also from the Medieval period.

From the Modern age, the parish church of San Pedro from the 16th century still stands.  It has four Baroque altarpieces as well as shields and emblazoned houses.

It is essential to visit the Chapel of Cristo de la Misericordia, with its breathtaking views of the Arribes. It is also possible to visit the remains of the bell cote from the church of San Leonardo located in the deserted village with the same name and the abandoned railway line of Hispanolusa.

The oil mills, the fountain, the bridge and the Duero Informational Center are also interesting to visit.
