Azinhoso

Bragança. Route: International Douro

A short distance from Mogadouro, the village of Azinhoso forms part of the region known as Arribes del Duero.

In 1386, Juan I granted status to the village, benefiting the church of Santa María de Azinhoso.  The church is Romanesque and Gothic from the 13th century and is a place of great devotion and the center of pilgrimages located in the north of the Duero. It is said that the Saint Constable of Portugal, Nuno Álvares Pereira was a pilgrim in many Marian sanctuaries in the 14th century and he donated a memento that is still conserved today in the church.

The village still possesses a castle with remains from the wall reinforced by the topography of the terrain.  Even though it is located in an area of difficult access, it is not impossible to visit.  In addition, the most famous cycling routes in Portugal pass through this area and the Mogadouro airfield is found here.
